The work comprises 40 floating red LED lights, floating just below the surface of a puddle and blink randomly.

The Waiting was created at this location and was exhibited during the contemporary music and art festival Into the Great Wide Open. While searching for a suitable spot, Titia Ex came across the skating rink’s pond, which lies unused in the summer. This elusive space — an in-between place with no fixed function — inspired her to create the light art installation The Waiting, named after the song by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

Twilight
In this undefined environment, the work offers not direction, but presence. The pulsating red lights inevitably draw the viewer’s attention. The light defines the space. The installation transforms the meaning of this forgotten place without altering its physical form. The indecipherable rhythm, combined with the descending darkness, evokes a sense of restlessness and excitement. At the same time, the rhythm invites surrender: one stays, watches and waits in silence.

Het werk omvat 40 zwevende rode LED-lights - net onder het oppervlak van een plas - die kort-lang- kort-kort-lang knipperen.

The Waiting ontstond vanuit deze locatie en werd getoond tijdens het hedendaagse muziek- en kunstfestival Into the Great Wide Open. Op zoek naar een geschikte plek vond Titia Ex de in de zomer ongebruikte plas van de schaatsbaan. Deze moeilijk te duiden plek — een tussenruimte zonder vaste functie — inspireerde haar tot het lichtkunstwerk The Waiting, vernoemd naar het nummer van Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

Schemering
In deze onbestemde omgeving geeft het werk geen richting, maar aanwezigheid. De pulserende rode lichten trekken onvermijdelijk de aandacht van de kijker. Het licht markeert de ruimte. De installatie verandert de betekenis van deze vergeten plek zonder haar fysieke vorm te veranderen. Het onleesbare ritme, in combinatie met de invallende duisternis, roept een gevoel van rusteloosheid en opwinding op. Tegelijkertijd nodigt het ritme uit tot overgave: men blijft, kijkt en wacht in stilte.
