The work comprises 40 floating red LED lights, floating just below the surface of a puddle and blink randomly.

The Waiting is a site-specific project. It is a computer-animated installation that was shown during the contemporary music and art festival Into The Great Wide Open. Looking for a suitable location, Titia Ex found the summer's neglected skating rink lake. This unidentifiable spot, this in-between space, inspired her to create the light artwork The Waiting, named after 'The Waiting' a number by Tom Petty. The Waiting is the hardest part', he sings.

Twilight
At dusk, darkness increases and a string of lights emerges. The viewer's attention is drawn to the continuously pulsing red lights. The unreadable rhythm of these lights combined with the rising darkness evokes a sense of restlessness and excitement. At the same time, the effect of the rhythm of the lights is to make one surrender and wait in silence.
'The Waiting is the hardest part' sings Tom Petty. Waiting for dusk, waiting for light, waiting for darkness. Sometimes waiting is the best part.

The Waiting is speciaal voor deze locatie gemaakt en werd getoond tijdens het hedendaagse muziek en kunst festival Into the Great Wide Open. Op zoek naar een geschikte locatie vond Titia Ex de in de zomer verwaarloosde plas van de schaatsbaan. Deze niet te duiden plek, deze tussen-ruimte, inspireerde haar tot het maken van het lichtkunstwerk The Waiting naar een nummer van Tom Petty & the Heartbeakers. 'The Waiting is the hardest part', zingt hij. Tom Petty is ook de naamgever van het festival.

Schemering
In de schemering neemt de donkerte toe en komt er een lint van lichten tevoorschijn. De aandacht van de kijker wordt getrokken door de continu pulserende rode lichten. Het onleesbare ritme van deze lichten in combinatie met de opkomende duisternis roept een gevoel van rusteloosheid en opwinding op. Tegelijkertijd heeft het ritme van de lichten tot gevolg dat men zich overgeeft en in stilte wacht.
