Light & Dark as Material
Titia Ex is a visual artist and artistic researcher. Her work stems from the conviction that light & dark not only determine how we perceive our environment but also actively shape it. She uses light & dark, time & space as artistic materials to shift the experience of a place and deepen our relationship with the living environment.

The City as Canvas
Titia Ex approaches public space as a dynamic system in which people, nature, technology, and the cycle of day & night are constantly interacting. She works with the available light and the specific characteristics of a place. By subtly transforming existing lighting situations, she creates installations, temporary interventions, and light-sensitive walks that make the often invisible rhythms of an environment tangible. In doing so, she invites us to look differently, to slow down, and to experience the environment anew.

The Cycle of Day & Night
The transition between light & dark forms the heart of her practice. In these border areas, she investigates how an environment manifests itself time and again: appearing and disappearing, revelation and retreat. By making these transitions palpable, the way we relate to a place shifts, creating space for wonder, reflection, and a deeper connection with the world around us.

Artistic Research
Her artistic research operates at the intersection of art, ecology, technology, and public space. Through observation, field research, scientific insights, and sensory experiments, she investigates how light & darkness influence the health of people and the living environment. In doing so, she develops a practice in which public space is approached as a living system, in which human and natural rhythms are inextricably linked.

City Light Master
Her artistic research into light & darkness led to the initiative for the role of City Light Master of Amsterdam. Based on the conviction that the cycle of day & night is an essential perspective for the city, she brings this theme back into the public and professional debate. Her work shows how artistic imagination can contribute to a healthy, just, and future-proof living environment, in which light & darkness are once again recognized as indispensable qualities.

Worldwide exposure & representation in collections
Her works, objects and installations have been exhibited worldwide, such as in London, Berlin, Paris, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Beijing, Gwangju, Manama, Jerusalem, Istanbul and represented in collections of institutions like the University Medical Center Leiden; Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; Nederlands Architectuur Instituut: Glass Museum Graz Austria; Donnell Library New York; Philips Museum Eindhoven; Bureau Spoorbouwmeester Station Den Bosch; Museum Op Solder Amsterdam, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various private collections.

Licht & donker als materiaal
Titia Ex is beeldend kunstenaar en artistiek onderzoeker. Haar werk vertrekt vanuit de overtuiging dat licht & donker niet alleen bepalen hoe wij onze omgeving waarnemen, maar deze ook actief vormgeven. Zij gebruikt licht & donker, tijd & ruimte als artistieke materialen om de ervaring van een plek te verschuiven en onze relatie tot de leefomgeving te verdiepen.

De stad als canvas
Titia Ex benadert de openbare ruimte als een dynamisch systeem waarin mens, natuur, technologie en de cyclus van dag & nacht voortdurend met elkaar in wisselwerking staan. Zij werkt met het aanwezige licht en de specifieke eigenschappen van een plek. Door bestaande lichtsituaties subtiel te transformeren, creëert zij installaties, tijdelijke interventies en licht-sensitieve wandelingen die de vaak onzichtbare ritmes van een omgeving ervaarbaar maken. Zo nodigt zij uit om anders te kijken, te vertragen en de omgeving opnieuw te beleven.

De cyclus van dag & nacht
De overgang tussen licht & donker vormt het hart van haar praktijk. In deze grensgebieden onderzoekt zij hoe een omgeving zich steeds opnieuw manifesteert: verschijnen en verdwijnen, onthulling en terugtrekking. Door deze overgangen voelbaar te maken, verschuift de manier waarop wij ons tot een plek verhouden en ontstaat ruimte voor verwondering, reflectie en een diepere verbinding met de wereld om ons heen.

Artistiek Onderzoek
Haar artistieke onderzoek beweegt zich op het snijvlak van kunst, ecologie, technologie en de publieke ruimte. Vanuit observatie, veldonderzoek, wetenschappelijke inzichten en zintuiglijke experimenten onderzoekt zij hoe licht & donker de gezondheid van mens en leefomgeving beïnvloeden. Daarmee ontwikkelt zij een praktijk waarin de openbare ruimte wordt benaderd als een levend systeem, waarin menselijke en natuurlijke ritmes onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn.

Stadslichtmeester
Haar artistieke onderzoek naar licht & donker leidde tot het initiatief voor de rol van Stadslichtmeester van Amsterdam. Vanuit de overtuiging dat de cyclus van dag & nacht een essentieel perspectief is voor de stad, brengt zij dit thema terug in het publieke en professionele debat. Haar werk laat zien hoe artistieke verbeelding kan bijdragen aan een gezonde, rechtvaardige en toekomstbestendige leefomgeving, waarin licht & donker opnieuw als onmisbare kwaliteiten worden erkend.

Internationale tentoonstellingen & collecties
Haar werken, objecten en installaties zijn internationaal tentoongesteld in steden als Londen, Berlijn, Parijs, Los Angeles, New York, Tokio, Beijing, Gwangju, Manama, Jeruzalem, Istanbul. Haar werk is opgenomen in collecties van o.a.
