The Art of Light & Darkness

Voor Titia Ex zijn licht & donker geen tegenpolen, maar onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Samen bepalen zij hoe wij ons oriënteren, wat zichtbaar wordt en wat verborgen blijft. Niet alleen in fysieke zin, maar ook als ruimte voor verbeelding, reflectie en het onbekende. Donker is niet de afwezigheid van licht, maar een eigen ruimte waarin andere vormen van waarneming, leven en verbeelding ontstaan.

Met lichtinstallaties, ruimtelijke interventies en licht-sensitieve wandelingen opent Ex nieuwe manieren om de wereld om ons heen waar te nemen. Haar werk onderzoekt hoe licht & donker onze relatie met de wereld beïnvloeden: wat verschijnt en verdwijnt, wat aandacht krijgt en wat zich aan het oog onttrekt.

Elke locatie heeft een eigen ritme. Dag en nacht, seizoenen, weersomstandigheden, menselijke activiteit en ecologische processen vormen samen een voortdurend veranderend geheel. Ex werkt vanuit wat een plek al in zich draagt: licht, donker, geschiedenis, tijd en karakter. Door subtiele verschuivingen ontstaan installaties die de ervaring van een plek verdiepen en uitnodigen tot een andere manier van kijken, bewegen en aanwezig zijn.

Haar praktijk ontstaat vanuit aandachtig kijken, luisteren en observeren. Via veldonderzoek en samenwerking met wetenschappers, ontwerpers, ecologen en andere disciplines onderzoekt zij hoe licht & donker onze ervaring van de wereld beïnvloeden. Van deze praktijk ontwikkelde zij licht-sensitieve wandelingen: ontmoetingen met de stad waarin deelnemers de wisselwerking tussen licht, donker, tijd en omgeving opnieuw leren ervaren.

Vanuit deze praktijk ontstond de rol van Stadslichtmeester van Amsterdam. Vanuit deze onafhankelijke positie brengt Ex het perspectief van de kunstenaar in het maatschappelijke en beleidsmatige gesprek over de kwaliteit van licht & donker in de stad. Zo brengt zij kunst, onderzoek en beleid samen in het gesprek over licht & donker als essentiële kwaliteiten van al het leven.

The Art of Light & Darkness

For Titia Ex, light & darkness are not opposites but inseparably linked. Together, they determine how we orient ourselves, what becomes visible and what remains hidden. Not only in a physical sense, but also as a space for imagination, reflection and the unknown. Darkness is not the absence of light, but a space in which other forms of perception, life and imagination arise.

Through light installations, spatial interventions and light-sensitive walks, Ex opens new ways of perceiving the world around us. Her work explores how light & dark influence our relationship with the world: what appears and disappears, what attracts our attention and what eludes the eye.

Every location has its own rhythm. Day and night, the seasons, weather conditions, human activity and ecological processes together form a constantly changing whole. Ex works with what a place already possesses: light, darkness, history, time and character. Through subtle shifts, she creates installations that deepen the experience of a place and invite a different way of looking, moving and being present.

Her practice stems from attentive looking, listening and observing. Through field research and collaboration with scientists, designers, ecologists and other disciplines, she explores how light and darkness influence our experience of the world. From this practice, she has developed light-sensitive walks: encounters with the city in which participants learn to experience the interplay between light, darkness, time and the environment anew.

It was from this practice that the role of Amsterdam’s City Light Master emerged. From this independent position, Ex brings the artist’s perspective to the social and policy-making discourse on the quality of light & dark in the city. In this way, she brings together art, research and policy in the conversation about light and darkness as essential qualities of all life.

Worldwide exposure & representation in collections
Her works, objects and installations have been exhibited worldwide, such as in London, Berlin, Paris, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Beijing, Gwangju, Manama, Jerusalem, Istanbul and represented in collections of institutions like the University Medical Center Leiden; Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; Nederlands Architectuur Instituut: Glass Museum Graz Austria; Donnell Library New York; Philips Museum Eindhoven; Bureau Spoorbouwmeester Station Den Bosch; Museum Op Solder Amsterdam, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various private collections.
