Light-sensitive walks

Through Light-Sensitive Walks, artist Titia Ex explores how light influences our perception, our rhythms, and our relationship with the world around us. Drawing from her artistic practice, she develops walking routes that invite us to experience a place anew: the progression of natural light, the influence of artificial light, the role of darkness, and the way in which light shapes the atmosphere of an environment.

In a 24/7 city, where light and constant stimuli increasingly influence our daily patterns, these walks offer space for slowing down, wonder, and encounter. Together with local residents and professionals from relevant fields, participants rediscover their surroundings, bringing attention to what often remains unnoticed: the atmosphere of a street, the effects of light, and the interweaving of human and natural rhythms. The transition between day and night becomes tangible, revealing how light helps shape our experience of time, space, and our surroundings.

The walks offer an intimate, sensory experience at the intersection of art, the living environment, and human perception. Each route is shaped by the specific character of its location and invites a shared experience of the city — with a focus on the relationship between people, light, darkness, and the world in which we live.

Licht-sensitieve wandelingen

Met licht-sensitieve wandelingen verkent kunstenaar Titia Ex hoe licht onze waarneming, ons ritme en onze relatie met de wereld om ons heen beïnvloedt. Vanuit haar artistieke praktijk ontwikkelt zij wandelroutes die uitnodigen om een plek opnieuw te ervaren: het verloop van natuurlijk licht, de invloed van kunstlicht, de aanwezigheid van donkerte en de manier waarop licht de sfeer van een omgeving bepaalt.

In een 24/7-stad, waarin licht en prikkels onze dagelijkse patronen steeds sterker beïnvloeden, bieden de wandelingen ruimte voor vertraging, verwondering en ontmoeting. Samen met bewoners en betrokken professionals wordt de plek opnieuw ontdekt en ontstaat aandacht voor wat vaak onopgemerkt blijft: de sfeer van een straat, de werking van licht en de verwevenheid tussen menselijke en natuurlijke ritmes. De overgang tussen dag en nacht wordt voelbaar en laat zien hoe licht onze ervaring van tijd, ruimte en omgeving mede vormt.

De wandelingen vormen een intieme, zintuiglijke ervaring op het snijvlak van kunst, leefomgeving en menselijke beleving. Elke route ontstaat vanuit de specifieke plek en nodigt uit tot een gedeelde ervaring van de stad — met aandacht voor de relatie tussen mens, licht, donkerte en de wereld waarin we leven.

Professional Reflection: Learning to See the City Through Dark and Light

During several light-sensitive walks led by Titia Ex, I learned to experience the city in a completely different way. Together with residents, politicians, police officers, and municipal professionals, I explored familiar streets through a new lens, focusing on the relationship between light, darkness, and human experience.

What impressed me most was Titia’s ability to show that light is never neutral. She demonstrated how lighting influences our sense of safety, comfort, orientation, and connection to a place. By paying attention to shadows, contrast, colour, and atmosphere, I became much more aware of how urban spaces affect our emotions and behaviour.

These walks changed the way I look at the city. They taught me that darkness is just as important as light, and that both play a vital role in creating meaningful and welcoming public spaces.
