Halo is a permanent circle of light floating above the chapel of the Saint Willibrordus Church (1877). The work transforms the way the church is perceived within the city. With a subtle gesture, it shifts attention from street level to the architecture and the space above.

The circle of light refers to the ancient halo, the aureole in religious art symbolising light, presence and the transcendent. Halo translates this symbol into a contemporary urban context, connecting the spiritual significance of the historic site with humanity’s enduring fascination with light.

The circle consists of two neon lines: a warm golden inner ring and a bright white outer ring. The two lines of light draw the gaze upward; beyond the light, the dark sky opens up, where space, silence and the infinity of the universe become tangible.

Utrecht Lumen brings the rich history of Utrecht to life with light artworks that can be admired 365 evenings a year. The route leads visitors through the historic city center and reveals special places that take on new meaning in the dark.

Halo is een permanente cirkel van licht die boven de kapel van de Sint-Willibrorduskerk (1877) zweeft. Het werk verandert de manier waarop de kerk in de stad wordt waargenomen. Met een subtiel gebaar verplaatst het de aandacht van het straatniveau naar de architectuur en de ruimte daarboven.

De lichtcirkel verwijst naar de eeuwenoude halo, het aureool dat in religieuze kunst staat voor licht, aanwezigheid en het transcendente. Halo vertaalt dit symbool naar een hedendaagse stedelijke context en verbindt de spirituele betekenis van de historische plek met de voortdurende menselijke fascinatie voor licht.

De cirkel bestaat uit twee neonlijnen: een warm gouden binnenring en een helder witte buitenring. De twee lichtlijnen trekken de blik omhoog; voorbij het licht opent zich de donkere hemel, waar ruimte, stilte en de oneindigheid van het universum voelbaar worden.

Utrecht Lumen brengt de rijke geschiedenis van Utrecht tot leven met lichtkunstwerken die 365 avonden per jaar te bewonderen zijn. De route voert bezoekers door de historische binnenstad en onthult bijzondere plekken die in het donker een nieuwe betekenis krijgen.
